Shop Mechanic

Position Overview 
Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul trucks, trailers, and facilities and inspect, maintain and repair any type of hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems on equipment and facilities. 

Essential Job Functions
  • Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, to include, but not limited to: power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
  • Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Use hand tools including, but not limited to, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Test drive trucks to diagnose malfunctions and/or to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
  • Rebuild gas or diesel engines.
  • Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.
  • Enhance maintenance department and RMT reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
  • Maintain vehicle records by annotating services and repairs.
  • Comply with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards.
  • Maintain shop/vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, etc.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly.
  • Ability to work outdoors the majority of the time, and withstand extreme weather conditions.
  • Must possess basic math skills: multiplication, division, percentages. 
  • Must have basic computer abilities and be very comfortable working with computers. 
  • Must maintain regular, dependable attendance and a high level of performance
  • Mechanical – knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Customer Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service, to include meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Repair – repair machines or systems using the proper tools. All repairs will be made using set, written industry standards.
  • Troubleshooting – determining cause(s) of operating errors and determining course of action. 
  • Operation Monitoring – watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure equipment is working properly.
  • Critical Thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Equipment Maintenance – perform routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Quality Control Analysis – conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
The employee is regularly required to stand, sit and walk; use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Must be able to bend, stoop, balance, kneel, crouch, twist or crawl; lift up to 50 pounds alone; climb on top of, and underneath equipment, trucks, etc. Must be able to speak and hear well enough to communicate with all team members, vendors, and customers 100% of the time, and respectfully. Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to dust, moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
